If you take a closer look at a Mercedes-BenzW201 (190E) or W124 (e.g. 200E or 500E), you will notice that the rear-view mirrors have a very different shape. The one on the right is narrower and higher.
At the time, this was obviously intended to reduce air resistance due to the smaller cross-sectional area, but also to optimize rear view, especially when turning and parking, where the higher mirror on the right has a positive effect.
However, Daimler-Benz's innovation did not catch on in the long term because there were probably aesthetic arguments against different mirror shapes and the legislator also exerted more influence on the mirror surface.
