There were tourist drives on the Nürburgring 40 years ago and more, and even then the drivers didn't always have everything under control. The difference to today, however, was probably that the safety equipment of the cars back then was significantly worse and the risk of injury was correspondingly higher. Let's hope that none of the drivers shown in the video from 1970 (Adenauer Forst, Nürburgring, YouTube) suffered any serious injuries. It is striking that the majority of the cars involved in the accident were rear- or mid-engined.
