20 million self-driving cars in 2025? And the classics?
So, according to Juniper Research, 20 million autonomous cars will be driving around on our roads in just 10 years, whereby "our" here is certainly to be understood in terms of the largest possible geography.
So if there are a few thousand in this country, the figure seems less threatening. Tesla thinks it will be ready in two years' time, while recent incidents show that others still need to practise. Whether a year earlier or later, the self-driving car will come, just as surely as the navigation system, the distance radar or the automatic parking system for cars did.
Of course, little will change for our classic and vintage cars, except that they will now have to share the road with these computer-controlled cars. At least in the short term.
In the medium term, however, fewer and fewer people will be able to drive a car manually. Even today, many drivers no longer know how to operate a starting aid (choke) or an ignition adjustment (pre-ignition/post-ignition) and even switching on the lights by hand seems to be too much for some people. So in the long term, these autonomous cars will reduce the number of young drivers, but perhaps there will be good YouTube videos to teach the kids of tomorrow how to drive classic cars.
