The fact that old cars are more prone to breakdowns than modern ones can be seen at rally events, for example, if you compare the cars present with those registered.
Not only are some of the registered cars always missing at almost every rally, for example because they broke down on the approach (or even before), but vehicles are also repeatedly replaced.
This pleases neither the organizer nor the spectators, because a rare and special car is usually replaced by a less rare and less special vehicle. A Bugatti Type 57 then becomes a Porsche 911 or a Lancia Flaminia becomes a Mercedes-Benz 280 SL.
The organizer usually has to accept the entry change because, after all, the paying participants don't grow on trees. The participant can compete with a usually more reliable car that might otherwise not have been accepted in the entry. And he can at least amortize the entry fee, because after all, he probably really wanted to compete with the vehicle originally entered and so fate has already struck enough ...
