A Turbo Carrera?
08/10/2015
When the PorscheTurbo was introduced in 1974 as a 75-series model, it was called the 930 or simply the Porsche Turbo in this country. The American pre-series models, however, bore the designation "Turbo Carrera" on the rear, probably to indicate their proximity to the normal Carrera.
These pre-production vehicles arrived in the USA with a cleaned 234 hp to produce local marketing material, but also to give the press people an impression of the new car.
Not everything went absolutely smoothly at the time. Two of the four pre-production vehicles suffered from turbo damage, as the practice of allowing the turbo to cool down for one or two minutes at idle after hard driving was not yet known at the time. One of the vehicles was even stolen and later found gutted.
Now one of the four American pre-production models is going under the hammer at the RM Sotheby's auction in Monterey in mid-August for USD 300,000 to 400,000! Will the prototype status justify this price?
Of course there is also a report on the Porsche 930 Turbo on Zwischengas .
