Today, we are used to ever smaller and more intelligent headlights.
In the 1980s (and before), however, engineers bolted entire batteries of headlights onto the cars. In Group B (1982 to 1986), eight headlights at the front were almost the norm.
Aerodynamics were much less important than maximum light output. No wonder, because at the speeds that the cars reached with up to 600 hp, plenty of light was essential for survival at night.
It must also have been impressive to sit in a slower vehicle and see one of these light sources, like an artificial sun, getting brighter and brighter in the rear-view mirror.
