Classic pearls of the future - Toyota GT86 or BRZ
08/11/2015
There are not many low-priced cars of current production that can be optimistically predicted to achieve classic status, but the ToyotaGT86 or its alter-ego SubaruBRZ are certainly among them.
There are solid reasons for this, as the compact coupé's philosophy is reminiscent of the robust used sports cars of the sixties and seventies. In other words: Front engine, rear-wheel drive, no excessive luxury and a focus on driving pleasure. Toyota has two sports car legends of its own to offer in this respect (2000 GT and Sports 800)
Even if the speedster can't keep up with all its competitors, hardly any test driver has complained, because driving the GT86 or BRZ is entertaining anyway.
Whether you opt for the Toyota or the Subaru is at most a question of personal preference; under the bodywork and also in the visible area, the two variants hardly differ. We think "BRZ" just sounds cool, but the Toyota GT86 has at least as many friends.
The two variants share the boxer engine from Subaru, just like the rest of the car. 200 hp from two liters of displacement are available at the rear axle. The transmission is a traditional six-speed gearbox (a six-speed automatic is also available).
The interior has a classic sports look with analog instruments and rocker switches with a nostalgic feel.
At less than 1.3 tons, the Subaru BRZ or the Toyota GT86 are among the modern lightweights; at a good 4.2 meters long and almost 1.8 meters wide, it is larger than one would expect at first glance.
The car is offered at a comparatively low price in this country. It costs around 30,000 euros, while the manual Subaru BRZ costs CHF 35,800 in Switzerland in 2015. A car for the young and young at heart, its success speaks for itself. And it is already being eagerly tuned, as many fans think that the factory version still looks too good.
So there is much to suggest that the compact 2+2 sports cars from Toyota and Subaru will one day also be in demand as youngtimers and classic cars.
