Summary
Is 40 hp enough for a sports car? Rather no. The people in charge at Simca realized this around 55 years ago and doubled the power of the coupé based on the Simca 1000, which was fitted by Bertone, in one fell swoop. There was no longer a lack of power, especially as the coupé remained affordable with a four-digit purchase price. This vehicle report tells the story of the elegant Simca Coupé and shows the two generations in historical and current images as well as in the sales literature.

Only a few sporty cars have managed to double their performance in just five years and go from boulevard cruiser to genuine sports car. The Simca Coupé designed by Bertone is one of these exceptions. The French car manufacturer Simca was founded in 1935 by Henri T. Pigozzi in Paris-Nanterre. Initially, the company built clones of the Fiat types 5 and 8, but after the war it increasingly emancipated itself and put an independent model on its wheels with the Simca Aronde. In 1954, the company was able to take over Ford's production plant in Poissy, while at the same time the model range was expanded to include eight-cylinder models such as the Vedette and Versailles.
