Electrics and electronics are the most common causes of breakdowns in classic cars
Even when they were new, cars from the thirties or sixties were much less reliable than modern vehicles, and owners and drivers were well served if they could fix minor breakdowns themselves. This has not improved with age, and classic cars sometimes stall or refuse to start. But what is the most common cause of problems, we wanted to know from Zwischengas readers and asked about the most common reason for breakdowns.
The most common cause of breakdowns is the electrical system, with almost 2/5 of all respondents citing this as the most frequent cause of problems.
Overheating and its subsequent problems were the second most frequently cited, at 26%, closely followed by difficulties with the fuel supply and mixture formation. With these three main causes, practically all breakdown triggers have been named, as only 6% of respondents were able to decide on the other problem areas, e.g. braking system, transmission or any other cause.
