The beautiful world of Aston Martins thirty years ago
The extremely comprehensive German-language Aston Martin brochure not only indulges in tradition on several pages, it also keeps an eye on production. It sounds like this, among other things:
"On entering our factory, one is immediately struck by the close link between technology and tradition, which unfortunately cannot be said of the mass production to which lower quality motor vehicles are subjected.
At every stage of the assembly of cars as powerful as the Vantage or as advanced as the Lagonda, there is close cooperation between craftsmen working with great skill and the best production machinery."
A few paragraphs later it says:
" A few steps further on, another craftsman - a true craftsman, like all his colleagues in Tickford Street - carefully rolls a flat piece of aluminum into elegant curves for an Aston hood, a task that takes a whole week. From the bodyshop, the chassis, now taking its distinctive shape, continues through the paint shop where it receives its first nine coats of paint, each layer polished by hand before the next is applied."
These texts sound almost affectionate, and the company and vehicles begin to grow on you.
