About cleaning whitewall tires
01/29/2013
In 1955, the operating instructions for the BMW 501 V8 stated how whitewall tires should be handled:
"Whitewall tires are supplied with a protective coating, which should only be brushed off with warm soapy water after final assembly.
During operation, whitewall tires should also be cleaned with soapy water. In the event of heavy soiling, one of the cleaning agents IMI, ATA, VIM etc. can also be used, but under no circumstances petrol, benzene, kerosene, oil or similar cleaning agents.
In stubborn cases, a mixture of 5 parts soft soap, 5 parts ammonia, 40 parts methylated spirits and 50 parts water or a paste of methylated spirits with fine pumice powder or with one of the above-mentioned cleaning agents will help.
These pastes must not come into contact with the paintwork. Finally, clean the tires with clear water and a brush."
The complete operating instructions for the BMW 501 V8 from 1955, which of course also contain driving and not just cleaning instructions, can be found as usual in the Zwischengas archive and the report on the BMW 501 can of course also befound there .
