Rally icon Saab wins the WinterRaid 2013
01/22/2013
One is reminded of the Monte Carlo Rally, of "Carlsson on the roof". Yes, Eric Carlsson won the famous rally around the small Mediterranean principality in 1962 in a Saab 92. Now it may be a Saab 96 that Stephan Musfeld and Jürg D. Toffol are driving, but it also looks like a real rally car. And with it, the experienced team emerges as the winner of this year's WinterRaid with just 70 fault points. Philipp Buhofer and Peter Lustenberger came second in an Austin-Healey BN-7 3000 Mk2 from 1960; the Healey also earned its spurs in many rallies. And the 1972 Lancia Fulvia, driven by Christopher and Tim Oechsle, is also one of the rally winners of the past. And if that wasn't enough Monte Carlo "feeling", a Mercedes-Benz 220 Sb also arrived in fifth place, not unlike the car in which Börhinger/Lang finished second behind Carlsson in the 1962 Monte Carlo Rally.
And there are even more parallels. The 2013 WinterRaid lived up to its name. Masses of snow, cold, day and night stages, excursions into the Dolomites and all the way to Cortina d'Ampezzo demanded a lot from the rally participants. But that's exactly how a winter rally should be!
