Corvette buying frenzy in the United States
We have just celebrated the 60th birthday of the Corvette and obviously the demand for beautiful and rare plastic sports cars from the Chevrolet manufacturer continues unabated.
It all started this weekend on January 18, 2013 at the RM Auction at the Arizona Biltmore Resort. 84 vehicles were auctioned off in a convention center reminiscent of a private castle at the outlet of Camelback, including a rare 1968 Chevrolet Corvette L88 in red. USD 450,000 to 550,000 had been expected for the 540 hp sports car (according to the estimated price), but the highest bid of USD 420,000 was below the minimum selling price - not sold.
Things went better one day later at Gooding & Co. A blue, open 69 Corvette L88 (pictured above) was auctioned for an incredible USD 730,000 (before commissions and taxes).
If you're less interested in special rarities and more in a beautiful American classic that won't cost you hundreds of thousands, Kissimmee was the place to go.
Over 400 Chevrolet Corvettes were (and still are) on offer at Mecum. Over 10 days (January 18 - 27, 2013), around 3,000 vehicles, including heaps of Camaro and Corvette, will be auctioned off in Florida (over 3,000 km from Scottsdale/Arizona). From early C1s to beautifully refurbished C2s and modern C6s, the prices were mostly in the five-digit dollar range, with an average of USD 50,000 being paid for a C2.
