The world of the VW Karmann-Ghia Type 34 in pastel colors
08/30/2012
Between 1961 and 1968, Volkswagen built a good 42,000 large VW Karmann-Ghia, known as the Type 34. As the most expensive Volkswagen product, the car was unable to catch up commercially with the smaller Type 14, which was built at the same time, despite its modern lines and advanced technology.
This was not due to the color palette on offer, as there was a choice of ten exterior colors, including a contrasting roof on request: Sea Blue, Pacific Blue, Terra Brown, Manila Yellow, Ruby (Red), Black, Pearl White, Emerald Green, Polar Blue and Anthracite. Even today, almost 50 years later, this color palette would not be completely absurd. The upholstery covers would be more likely to offend.
In the color brochure, they were presented together with the paint suggestions.
However, the sales brochure for the 1964 model year did not dare to experiment and opted for a black vehicle. But even so, it looked very attractive and it is not surprising that the front page was dominated by two admiring young people.
We recently published a contemporary test/driving report and, of course, the sales brochure and color palette can also be found in the Zwischengas archive.
