Hard to imagine today, but that's how it happened. According to the report in the 11/1962 issue of Road & Track, Bill Scace sat down in his 3.8-liter Jaguar E Type Cabriolet in 1962 from Chicago to Bonneville - around 2,500 km - and raced across the salt lake with the roof closed, setting a new record of 147.966 miles per hour (238 km/h) in the C Grand Touring class.
Dick Caron from Denver, who got 101.99 MPH (164 km/h) out of his Saab, and Conic Robertson, who whipped the Volvo PV-544 to 110.221 MPH (177 km/h), did not do much differently. The two set new records in the F Touring Sports and E Touring Sports classes.
