Four-hour marathon as the opening race of this year's AVD Oldtimer Grand Prix
At the opening race of this year's AVD Oldtimer Grand Prix weekend at the Nürburgring, the Eifel weather once again pulled out all the stops. The race started on a slightly damp or wet track in places. Then it slowly dried out, but local light drizzle changed the track lap after lap. And then the heavy rain came and almost turned the track into a slide.
The field offered an impressive selection of cars. Of course, there were many Porsches (see above), but there was also a selection of BMWs, Jaguar E/MK2s and Ford Mustangs, as well as many exotic cars and, of course, a large Alfa Romeo contingent.
Of course, everyone was eager to see the prominently announced Walter Röhrl, who drove a Porsche 911 together with Armin Zumtobel.
He didn't let himself get carried away and drove around the bends more often than not on three wheels.
The hearty efforts of the rivals did not go off without a trace.
But even the technology did not survive the four hours without problems everywhere.
The damp and constantly changing track motivated even experienced drivers to perform rally interludes...
... ... until the heavy rain then urged caution and a slower pace.
It has to be said once again: The Nordschleife is simply unique, both for the drivers and the spectators. Despite the cool temperatures and rain, many fans had gathered along the track and the most exciting observations were still being exchanged in the evening in the camping tent or at the hotel. That's the way it should be.
