Variety at the AVD Oldtimer Grand Prix 2011
08/13/2011
Variety was the order of the day on the second race day of the Oldtimer Grand Prix weekend, variety in terms of series, vehicles and, of course, the weather.
You hardly get a chance to catch your breath, with race after race, racing car class after racing car class following each other with minimal interruptions. Seeing Formula 1 cars from over five decades, touring cars and GT vehicles, as well as sports cars and prototypes within a short space of time is what makes the AVD Oldtimer Grand Prix so special. And you never get tired of it, at least for me there are no signs of wear and tear.
The only thing you could do without is the Eifel weather . Saturday also brought the obligatory rain and only the fog was missing for the "perfect" Nürburgring day.
Three highlights should be mentioned: For the first time, there was a reunion with DTM and STW cars. Who remembers the Rover 3500 or the Audi 200 Quattro in racing livery? Great!
And of course the race with around 20 Jaguar E-Types was an extraordinary spectacle. Unfortunately, the rain poured down during this race.
And just like last year, the twilight/night race of the two-seater sports cars and GTs up to 1960/1961 was once again a great event, not only because of the spirited duel between the Maserati drivers at the front, but also because of the wide range of vehicles and of course the very special conditions with wet roads.
In addition to the three highlights mentioned above, the "World Sportscar Masters" (picture at the very beginning), the historic Grand Prix cars up to 1961....
... the Grand Prix Masters (historic Formula 1) ....
... the revival of the DRM (1972 to 1981) ...
... and the "Roaring Twenties and Golden Thirties" with the pre-war sports cars ...
... as well as the Masters GT (until 1965).
The variety on offer is certainly part of the appeal of events such as the AVD Oldtimer Grand Prix, but of course also the opportunity to be so close to the action.
A complete and comprehensive report on the AVD Oldtimer Grand Prix is published in the racing section of Zwischengas.
