Hand-illustrated Alvis sales brochures in the fifties
Hand-painted illustrations in sales brochures were quite common before the war. However, as the possibilities of photography and retouching improved, more and more vehicle manufacturers switched to brochures with color and black-and-white photos.
Not so Alvis, who were still producing wonderfully illustrated brochures in the 1950s, as shown here in the form of the cover picture of a brochure published in 1953. Thanks to the freedom given to the illustrator, vehicles could be depicted larger, more elegantly or more dynamically than photography could capture.
The slogan: Alvis ... for those who appreciate the sheer joy of driving (translation: Alvis, for those who can enjoy the sheer joy of driving).
