RM Auctions kehrte am 3. bis 5. September 2020 nach Auburn, Indiana zurück, um erneut deutlich über 500 Autos vorwiegend amerikanischer Provenienz unter den Hammer zu bringen. 531 Autos wurden versteigert, über 85 % konnten verkauft werden. Rund 17 Millionen konnten so realisiert werden, die Interessenten bezahlten im Schnitt USD 37’382 pro verkauften Wagen.

Die Bieter bei der Auktion im Auburn Fall stammten aus nicht weniger als 34 Ländern, wobei mehr als 45 Prozent der Käufer zum ersten Mal RM-Kunden waren.
Zwei US-Vorkriegsklassiker als Teuerste
Die Auktion im Auburn-Herbst wurde passenderweise von einem Paar amerikanischer Klassiker angeführt – einem 1935er Auburn Eight Supercharged Speedster für USD 770’000 Dollar und einem 1936er Duesenberg Model J Tourster für USD 632’500 Dollar.
Der originale und vollständig restaurierte Auburn Eight Speedster wurde nach mehr als zwei Jahrzehnten zum ersten Mal wieder öffentlich angeboten. Der Auburn Eight Speedster wurde in der auffälligen, zeitgemäßen Nassau-Orange-Optik präsentiert, nachdem er ordnungsgemäß für den Gebrauch vorbereitet worden war, und wurde bei der Auktion durch den Duesenberg von 1936 angemessen ergänzt.
Als eines von nur zehn von Rollston für Duesenberg produzierten "JN"-Autos behielt das Modell J seinen ursprünglichen Motor, Antriebsstrang, Rahmen und Firewall. Nachdem der Duesenberg vor kurzem einer detaillierten mechanischen und kosmetischen Vorbereitung unterzogen wurde, präsentierte sich der Duesenberg wunderschön in einem eleganten und ungewöhnlichen Schokoladenfarbton.
Beide Wagen erreichten den mittleren Schätzwert nicht ganz, lagen aber nahe dran.
Unter den 10 am teuersten versteigerten Wagen stammten fünf aus der Vorkriegszeit, die anderen fünf aus den späten Vierziger- bis Sechzigerjahren.
Mehrere Sammlungen
Bei den RM-Auktionen konnten auch mehrere bedeutende Sammlungen von Einzeleigentümern während der dreitägigen Auktion starke Preise erzielen, darunter die Sammlung von Bill Akin, die von dem bekannten Enthusiasten, Historiker und Rennwagen-Restaurator Bill Akin aus Indianapolis zusammengestellt wurde.
Die Sammlung, die 11 Automobile und über 250 Erinnerungsstücke umfasste, die alle ohne Mindestpreis angeboten wurden waren, erzielte während der Samstagsauktion insgesamt fast USD 2 Millionen. Angeführt wurde die Sammlung von einem Trio bemerkenswerter Indianapolis-500-Rennwagen.
Zu den weiteren privaten Sammlungen, die bei der jährlichen Auktion im Auburn Fall angeboten werden, gehört die David Leimbach Collection, die 65 verschiedene Automobile umfasste und ein ganzes Spektrum von Big-Block-Muscle-Cars bis hin zu späten AMG-Mercedes-Benz-Modellen umfasste. Hier wurden ingesamt USD 1,4 Millionen realisiert.
Am teuerten war dabei ein Chevrolet Impala SS Cabriolet von 1964 für USD 60’500.
Die Roadmaster Collection, eine Chronik der Entwicklung des Buick, mit der vielfältigen Palette früher Veteranen, Rennwagen, Kleinserien-Cabriolets und Muscle Cars, erntete USD 1,3 Millionen, die Sammlung “Duane Sell”, bestehend aus 61 amerikanischen Klassikern aus der Vor- und Nachkriegszeit, erwirtschaftete USD 2,2 Millionen, angeführt von einem “Sunlit Gold”-farbenen Shelby GT500 Fastback mit Viergang-Schaltgetriebe von 1968 (USD 115’500 Dollar).

Zudem wurden 22 Autos aus der Konkursmasse von Unternehmen, die zuvor von Bikram Choudhury kontrolliert wurden, für zusammen knapp über eine Million amerikanische Dollars verkauft.
Interessant war auch die Versteigerung der Autos aus dem “Walter Miller Estate”, bestehend aus 39 unbestreitbar eklektischen Autos, die insgesamt fast USD 600’000 einbrachten.
Amerikanische Geschichte, aber nicht ausschliesslich
Von den mehr als 500 Autos kamen rund 4/5 aus den USA. Aber auch europäische Wagen waren vertreten so etwa Rolls-Royce und Mercedes-Benz mit jeweils 17 Wagen.
Auch zwei Ferrari kamen unter den Hammer, ein Testarossa von 1991 schlug sich dabei mit USD 137’500 sogar ziemlich gut.
Der angebotene Audi RS2 konnte allerdings (nach einem Höchstgebot von USD 51’000) nicht verkauft werden, während ein BMW 850i für USD 19’800 in eine neue Garage fand.
Im Schnitt unter den Erwartungen
Im Schnitt wurde etwa 84 % des mittleren Schätzwerts geboten, einige Autos aber schwangen sich deutlich höher auf, darunter ein Ford LTD LX von 1985, ein Chevrolet Deluxe Convertible von 1950 oder auch ein Mercedes-Benz CL 65 AMG von 2005, der auf USD 53’900 kam, obschon der Estimate nur bei USD 22’000 bis 28’000 festgesetzt gewesen war.
Damit war er allerdings der einzige Europäer, der sich derartig eindrücklich in Szene setzen konnte.
Es gab aber auch zahlreiche Autos, die weit unter dem Estimate blieben, so etwa ein Studebaker Light Sixe Coupe von 1920, das anstatt für USD 12’000 bis 18’000 lediglich USD 4400 verkauft wurde.
Auch ein VW-Porsche 914 von 1970 (USD 13’750) oder ein Lancia Flaminia 2.8 Coupé Pininfarina von 1964 (USD 19’800) konnten nicht brillieren und wurden weit unter dem Schätzpreis zugeschlagen.
Zufriedenes Auktionshaus
