Founded in 1919 by André Citroën, the company - like Lancia in Italy - was characterised by a great love of advanced technology and unconventional designs. However, always pushing the limits of what was technically feasible was very expensive, which is why Citroën went bankrupt in 1934 and was taken over by tyre manufacturer Michelin. It was under this management that the brand's most famous double-angled models were created. However, the takeover of Maserati in 1970 meant that Citroën itself became a takeover candidate within just four years. After the subsequent merger with Peugeot in 1975, Citroën lost much of its technical ingenuity and stylistic independence. From then on, the cars were much more conventional, even arbitrary. Peugeot-Citroën has been part of Stellantis since 2021.

They concluded: "In summary, the endurance test confirmed the view that the Citroën DS 19 represents a significant milestone in automotive engineering. Its driving comfort and safety are in a class of their own. Its technical creators achieved a real pioneering feat and the factory management showed unusual courage by starting production of this design. In addition, the test car proved itself so well in a rigorous endurance test that the "AR" decided to publish the results. Although this report shows that the DS 19 is not the end, but the beginning of a development, it has proved to be a reliable and, in view of its special characteristics, an award-worthy utility car. Hector Bossaert was dissatisfied: his Citroën DS needed to be lighter and more agile. From today's perspective, it is particularly interesting that the Fiat 500 and Citroën 2 CV ended up at the bottom of the table, but were the most successful exponents in this class, as they were built until 1975 or even 1990, when the comparison winners had not been on the production line for at least 10 years. Citroën Ami 6 - the Miss Miracle
Between 1961 and 1969, Citroën sold over one million Ami 6 vehicles. The technology came largely from the 2 CV, the unmistakable design by Bertoni and some elements of the interior were borrowed from the goddess DS. The practical car was particularly popular with the ladies, not least thanks to the centrifugal clutch. At the beginning of the sixties, Citroën was still confident that it could not only throw old technical traditions overboard, but also convince the masses of buyers of new solutions and design innovations. The new NSU RO 80 with the Wankel engine was to show whether it was superior to the Citroën DS, which was 13 years older. At the end of the sixties, Citroën believed in the future of the Wankel engine and invested generously in corresponding models. The first commercially available Citroën Wankel vehicle was the M35, which was loosely based on the Ami 6/8 but priced several classes higher. More than 20 years after its debut, the Citroën 2 CV was an automotive anachronism. With free-standing fenders and headlights, an unstable thin sheet metal body and minimal engine power, time had passed it by. However, the "Döschwoh" still had undeniable advantages such as its exceptional economy, excellent road holding and outstanding ride comfort. This historical test explains why the Citroën 2 CV was still a conscious choice in 1970.
With 32 hp, the most powerful Dyane offered twice as much power as the weakest 2 CV. In combination with the practical station wagon body, the middle of the small Citroëns was almost a contemporary car in 1970. However, due to its more serious appearance, some people found it much harder to forgive the Dyane for one or two shortcomings that would have been forgiven by the likeable Döschwo. Although only the later models had swivel headlights, these are one of the reasons why the Citroën DS became so well-known and admired. The story of the goddess (Déesse) began as early as 1955, when 80,000 orders were received at the presentation. In the late sixties and early seventies, Citroën produced several DS models with six-cylinder engines, which were used in rallies, among other things. For most people, the VW Beetle is the Volkswagen par excellence, in every sense of the word. A car for the people, a people's car. And the Beetle was indeed an above-average success. But before it, Ford's Model T had already passed the 15 million mark, and in modern times the Toyota Corolla, VW Golf and Ford's F-series even managed to reach over 30 million, although they were not the only people's cars to do so. The Wankel saloons Citroën GS Birotor and NSU Ro 80 were siblings and some of the technical differences only became apparent in the details. In terms of bodywork, however, they took completely different paths. While the Citroën was based on a weaker production counterpart, NSU developed a completely new and pioneering vehicle with the Ro 80. At the end of the day, however, both cars meant heavy losses for their manufacturers and, in the case of the NSU, even the end of the brand. Citroën was one of the companies that was convinced of the future viability of the Wankel engine. Together with NSU, it had invested in the Comotor company and launched the first vehicle with a single-disc Wankel engine on the market in 1970 with the Citroën M35. In the winter of 1974/1975, the magazine 'hobby' compared eight compact cars from five countries in a meticulous test that required driving on the Nordschleife and the participation of eight test drivers: the Audi 50 competed against the Citroën Ami Super, Datsun Cherry, Fiat 127, Innocenti Mini, Peugeot 104, Renault 5 and Simca 1000 GLE and won hands down. The Datsun Cherry came second, but this was not the only surprise in the extensive comparison test. After a hesitant start, the Citroën GS enjoyed an upward trend on the German market in the first half of 1975. The GS-X in particular, launched in October 1974, brought a significant upturn. Citroën GS - the original marvel
From 1970 to 1986, Citroën built the GS/GSA model, a car that was different from all its competitors. With a new type of aerodynamic saloon body with a hatchback and air-cooled boxer engine at the front, Citroën demonstrated its courage for independence and individualism. The GS also proved to be a match for the competition and almost 2.5 million units were built. Who says you can only use a buggy in summer? After all, a ski resort is just a big dune of snow. So we left the comfort zone of Caribbean temperatures in a Citroën Méhari and entered the natural cold chamber called winter. And like the four Jamaican sprinters in John Turteltaub's eponymous film, we discovered unexpected talents - not in ourselves, however, but in the little beach runabout.
From 1968 to 1987, Citroën built almost 150,000 of the Méhari leisure vehicle with a plastic body and 2CV mechanics. A very special version was the 4x4 variant, which was sold from 1979 to 1983 and turned the Méhari into a mountain goat. Citroën AX - French lightweight
In 1986, China was still a developing country when it came to cars. The most widely used vehicle was called the "Flying Pigeon" and was a bicycle. Around half a billion of these two-wheelers are said to have been in use in the Middle Kingdom at the time. In total, almost every Chinese person had a "bicycle". Citroën, however, brought a car to China to capitalize on the fascination and magic of a country that was just opening up to Western tourism: The Citroën AX. Parts of the campaign at the time were photographed on the Great Wall of China - the title of the campaign was "Révolutionnaire!" - was it the car back then? What is clear is that today the AX is a classic!
