NSU Ro 80 and Citroën GS Birotor - on the road with two dissimilar Wankel brothers

The Wankel saloons Citroën GS Birotor and NSU Ro 80 were siblings and some of the technical differences only became apparent in the details. In terms of bodywork, however, they took completely different paths. While the Citroën was based on a weaker production counterpart, NSU developed a completely new and pioneering vehicle with the Ro 80. At the end of the day, however, both cars meant heavy losses for their manufacturers and, in the case of the NSU, even the end of the brand. This comparative report looks at both vehicles, describes driving impressions in comparison and shows the models in many current and historical photos.

Citroën GS Birotor - the last European series production Wankel

Citroën was one of the companies that was convinced of the future viability of the Wankel engine. Together with NSU, it had invested in the Comotor company and launched the first vehicle with a single-disc Wankel engine on the market in 1970 with the Citroën M35. In 1973, the company followed suit and presented the Citroën GS Birotor with a twin-disc rotary engine. However, this car was not destined for a great future either, and after only 857 units had been built, the complex production was discontinued. This report goes into the history of the GS Birotor and shows the car in extensive historical photographs.

After a hesitant start, the Citroën GS enjoyed an upward trend on the German market in the first half of 1975. The GS-X in particular, launched in October 1974, brought a significant upturn. Shortly afterwards, the GS-X2 was added with 63 (instead of 54) hp. The differences between the two engines and whether the Citroën GS still had a special position in its class can be found in the test report from that time.
