A "convertible" of a different kind

At the Tokyo Motor Show in the fall of 1972, Toyota presented a study that was intended to stand for flexible use in a special way. The
Automobil Revue
noted at the time:
"Designed as a multi-purpose vehicle - The Toyota RV 2, intended as both a first and second car, has a body whose longitudinally divided roof section can be swung out to the side. Depending on the 'furnishing', the rear loading area can be used as a sleeping, living or dining area."
The design was further described:
"The roof structure of the estate car-like body is divided longitudinally at the top and can be swung out to the side. Depending on its use, the rear cargo area can be furnished as a dining room, lounge or sleeping area. According to the manufacturer, the RV-2 is based on the 2.6-liter Crown and reaches a top speed of 190 km/h. The luxurious interior with leather and plush carpets creates a very homely atmosphere."
Truly a versatile vehicle, which was also shown at the Amsterdam Motor Show in 1973. Compared to the Corolla and Celica also on show at the time, the RV 2 looked much more modern inside and out. Apparently there were also opportunities for series production at the time, at least large numbers of brochures were reportedly printed for the USA in 1973 to test the interest of buyers.
