The forgotten open Renault 5
07/19/2025
There was never a convertible version of the Renault 5 from the factory. However, this did not stop coachbuilders and enthusiasts from creating their own open-top versions of the R5.
Around the 1976 Paris Motor Show, the fashion label Cacherel and designer Maurice Calka presented the "Cacharelle" convertible.
The sun-friendly R5 did not require a roll bar and the soft top could be lowered completely. The rear seat bench was fixed for stiffening, and additional stabilizing elements further increased the rigidity.
The response was positive and two Parisian dealers took over sales.
We don't know how many cars were converted in this way, but the owners certainly enjoyed the colorful seat upholstery and the creatively designed soft top.
