Summary
There would probably be little more to say today about just over a hundred Packard models with a special design if they had not been designed by Howard Darrin. Darrin is considered one of the most influential designers in the USA. His creations were driven by the most famous actors, his shapes shaped entire vehicle brands. This vehicle report portrays one of 35 Packard One Eighty Darrin Convertible Victoria built in 1941 and tells the adventurous story behind it.

Preview (beginning of the article)
Thomas Banacek not only knew a multitude of (invented) Polish proverbs, he also had exquisite taste in cars. The insurance investigator in the US television series of the same name from the early 1970s drove a 1941 Packard One Eighty Darrin Convertible Victoria, the car that many Hollywood stars owned in the early 1940s. The elegant car was the brainchild of designer Howard Darrin. Howard "Dutch" Darrin was actually more than a designer, he was an engineer and inventor with an artistic streak. He was born in New Jersey, but spent part of the 1920s and 1930s in France, where he coachbuilt luxury cars together with Thomas Hibbard and later with a banker named Fernandez. In the mid-thirties, however, sales of expensive vehicles collapsed and Darrin moved back to America, where he immediately used his hip French-European style (and accent) for business purposes.
