Formula 1 at the movies
07/01/2025
The day before yesterday, I went to see the new movie "F1" with Brad Pitt in the cinema. And what does this have to do with classic cars, some readers may ask.
Well, firstly, I went to see the film in what used to be called a movie theater. Cinema palaces are already 100 years old, the first ones were built back in the 1920s. In the age of "streaming", however, a cold wind is blowing against the cinema, and the movie "F1" can already be watched via Apple+ on your home TV, tablet or phone.
Secondly, the movie itself is about an old timer in the strictest sense of the word. In the English context, "old timer" is an older man and Brad Pitt, at 61, fits the bill quite well. In the movie, however, he plays a somewhat younger man who actually makes it back into an F1 cockpit in modern times.
Thirdly, there are some flashbacks in the movie to the early racing career of racing driver Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) and he was driving a Lotus with Camel livery (similar to the picture above of Daniel Reinhard). And against Senna, Mansell and co.
But the movie is set in the present day and takes place in modern F1 with Verstappen, Hamilton, etc. And the fact that the 60-year-old Sonny Hayes is able to keep up so well is something of a miracle that only the Hollywood film factory could dream up.
We don't want to give any more away here, except to say that the movie offers good entertainment, beautiful racing scenes and a pretty exciting story. And that the whole thing probably has only a limited connection with the reality of today's Formula 1 ...
