It doesn't always have to be a V8 (car connoisseur quiz)
01/09/2025
Not every engine that is developed makes it into series production. Time and again in the history of the automobile, there have been ambitious projects that were doomed to failure because something was missing: Time, money or courage. Interestingly, the V8 seems to be particularly susceptible to this fate.
Just as often, however, car manufacturers have dared to attempt series production - only to fail just as often. The Pegaso Z-102 and the Glas 2600 V8 are among these ambitious but at best only moderately successful eight-cylinder engines. However, in neither case was the exotic design (spur gear DOHC forced control here, heterogeneous three-carburetor configuration and two timing belts there) responsible for the failure - at least not directly. However, the two elaborate V8 coupés quickly became too expensive for their manufacturers, and neither company survived.
Together with Ruedi Schoch, co-organizer of the British Car Meeting Mollis, we have selected ten V8 ventures that did not go into series production for a new quiz. Would you like to try and find out which ones they are?
