Forgotten movie cars: the '55 Chevrolet from "The Pom Pom Girls"
Oh yes, being a high school student in the seventies once again. The bell bottoms fit, everyone is dating everyone and teachers are stupid. Wasn't it like that? At least that's what movies like "The Pom Pom Girls" kept trying to make us believe about all the other high schools in the USA, except our own. In principle, this 89-minute hormone overload would be just as forgettable as all the other cheerleader flicks of the seventies if it weren't for the 1955 Chevrolet One-Fifty 2-Door Sedan driven by Jesse, one of the two main characters.
The tomato-red Tri-Chevy is the "girl next door", the everyday beauty of seventies customizing: narrow gray Torq Thrusts at the front, wide chrome-plated reversed steelies at the rear and an exhaust pipe in between that is no longer than necessary. No chrome, no flames, no air scoops. Here, someone has made the best of their car with few resources. Jesse's ride is not an exaggerated show car, but a slightly individualized used car, like the ones that could be found in every high school parking lot in the USA at the time.
Unfortunately, it is also treated exactly like a 21-year-old used car. And so it's not just on the road, but also off it. Car lovers can still watch the movie safely, because the Chevy survives. And at least the "chicken run" against the gray 1964 Ford Galaxie is reminiscent of a great classic from the fifties.
