Gullwing, again and again (car connoisseur quiz)
08/06/2023
When you say "Gullwing", most people think of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, which the Americans call the "Gullwing". But the 300 SL was neither the first gullwing, nor was it the only one. There were many other cars with doors that opened upwards, some of which functioned like wings and others like scissor doors. This type of entry has a few tangible advantages (e.g. space requirement to the side), but also disadvantages, which is why gullwing doors were rarely found in large-scale production. The examples attached here show the Lamborghini Countach (above) and the Bricklin SV-1.
Once again, we dived deep into our archives to find photos of vehicles with gullwing doors from five decades. The selection was quite rich, ten of which you should now recognize in our latest quiz.
Do you want to give it a try?
