It's always good to have reserves ...
The reserve fuel system has been the undoing of many a driver. However, in the days when an accurate fuel level indicator was a luxury or not even available at extra cost, many were saved by the reserve quantity in the tank and were able to gain a few more kilometers by switching to reserve when the engine was already beginning to stutter and thus still reach a filling station under their own steam.
The fuel tap was usually located under the dashboard, but in the Mercedes-Benz 500 Nürburg the engineers came up with something different ...
... and mounted the switch for the reserve quantity on the threshold on the passenger side, just behind the spare wheel. A special key is required to operate it.
And who knows, a clever passenger might even have managed to switch to reserve by means of a daring maneuver while driving ... if, yes, if you weren't already driving on the reserve. Then, of course, nothing helped at all.
