Delta, the very special GSM
08/21/2023
We would not have expected to see this car at the Oldtimer Grand Prix in Safenwil. Of course, you can see many rarities at this annual event, but a GSM Delta?
Most of the organizers' visitors probably didn't even know that there was ever a car manufacturer called GSM (short for Glassport Motors). Of course, we had a head start, as we were able to photograph a GSM Flamingo a few weeks ago. Its predecessor was called Dart, and both were built in South Africa. But because the Dart was too special for the small market in southern Africa, GSM founder Bob van Niekerk tried his hand at building 46 Dart models in the UK.
He actually managed to build a further 76 Dart in good old England, but they were called Delta there because the name "Dart" was already taken. However, the "GSM Cars Limited" operation was not really successful either, so van Niekerk moved back to South Africa and built the GSM Flamingo there.
In Safenwil, however, one of the rare GSM Delta from England made its rounds and was admired by the public, even if it was a little less shiny than other cars and somehow kept its special features under a bushel.
P.S. You can of course still read the report on the GSM Flamingo at any time, it covers the whole GSM story.
