Compared to later creations, the Lamborghini 350 GT and 400 GT 2+2 were the much less radical first works of tractor manufacturer Ferruccio Lamborghini in the field of luxury sports cars. They laid the foundations for the Miura, Countach and Diablo and, despite their unconventional appearance, impressed test drivers with their performance and quality. The Gran Turismo clientele, then as now, tended to keep a low profile, preferring established models from Stuttgart or Maranello. With the 350 GT, Ferruccio Lamborghini wanted to build the better Ferrari: faster, quieter and more comfortable. After earning more than his fair share of money with unenthusiastic work tools such as tractors, oil burners and air conditioning systems, the time was ripe for a little unreasonableness. So Lamborghini gathered together some of the best engineers in the country (some of whom had even once worked at proclaimed rival Ferrari) and had them design a luxury sports car to his specifications. A car that achieved high performance without a lot of noise and power, yet was still faster than all the roaring and energy-sapping high-speed machines out there.
