A spelling mistake with consequences
08/05/2023
Have you ever noticed how many contemporaries whose automotive formative phase fell in the late sixties still write about the "Opel Record" today? With a "C", mind you! As is so often the case, the toy industry is to blame, having spread false ideals not only to American blondes but also to German coupés with snappy hips. Specifically: the Siku brand on the base plate of the model with the serial number V271.
It reads "Opel Record Coupé", which is as false as it is legible to thousands of inexperienced pimps as an apparent truth. What is curious, however, is that the error only crept in with the "model update", i.e. with the change from the firmly connected disk wheels to the smooth-running "Flitzer" wheels in Rostyle design. In its first version, the white Opel presented itself as usual as a "Rekord" with a "K".
Coincidence, you say? You don't believe that a toy can have such a big influence on children? Then take a look at how many English people from the first Matchbox generation still write about the "Volkswagon" today.
