The renaissance of twin headlights
05/09/2023
Nowadays, with all the LED design gimmicks on modern vehicle fronts, it is no longer so easy to tell how many headlights a car has. Of course, things were different in the past with clearly defined lights and reflectors. Manufacturers such as BMW or Alfa Romeo, but also Jaguar, liked to use twin headlights back in the sixties and seventies to signal a sporty look. Examples include the Alfa Romeo Alfasud and the Sprint coupé (pictured above) from the same brand.
However, many car manufacturers later found broadband lights more attractive, such as those used by Mercedes-Benz or Opel. As a result, many 1980s models such as the Jaguar XJ, the Alfa Romeo 33 and the Bentley Mulsanne had large rectangular lights.
In the nineties, however, a renaissance began, at least that's what the magazine "auto motor und sport" wrote about.
But in fact: even Mercedes-Benz had resorted to twin headlights with the E-Class of the W210 series, at Alfa Romeo the Spider and the Coupé GTV of the 916 model also peeked out of four eyes ...
... and the revised Jaguar XJ saloon was again allowed to have four headlights at the front.
At the time, it was probably mainly about design, but better visibility was also expected. In addition, projection headlights with controlled light cones opened up new possibilities.
And what happened next? Exactly, the Alfa Romeo Brera, together with the Coupé and Spider (Type 939), even had six headlights at the front. However, this trend did not last too long ...
