Hakuna Nevada - The disappearance of a station wagon
04/15/2023
The roar of two V8 engines breaks the afternoon silence; one a melodic soprano, the other a rumbling bass baritone. Shortly afterwards, a Ferrari Roma and a Mercedes-AMG GT fly past me. I am fascinated - and only have eyes for the car driving between the two expressive eight-cylinder engines: a Renault Laguna Nevada, the estate version of the Rhombus mid-range model introduced in 1993 with the load compartment windows extending right up to the edge of the roof.
Now my taste in cars has never been the most compatible with the masses, but even by Krüger standards there is a need for explanation here. However, it's quite simple: if you live and work in Zurich, you simply become dull. Every day you see at least one super sports car with a price tag in the high six figures. At least one every quarter of an hour at the weekend in the city center. But when was the last time you saw a Renault Laguna? Especially as an estate called the "Grandtour" here?
Exactly. The R21 successor with the hawk nose in the hood has become rare. Like its ancestors and their competitors, the Laguna, which was even available with a V6, is one of those everyday statists that used to populate the streets in droves and then slowly disappeared unnoticed. Surviving Peugeot 404 Break and Citroën ID Familiale are the crowd favorites at every event today. And the first Renault Laguna will also be 30 years old next January. Who dares to take the first one to a classic car meeting?
