The Renault 16 entered the automotive scene in 1965 without any previous history, but with a convincing overall concept. Although it hardly offered anything truly revolutionary in any domain, the variable estate set many trends and offered more than most of its competitors. While most car manufacturers 50 years ago announced new models when they were largely finished or even ready for production, Renault took a different approach with the new R 16 model. As early as August 1964, photos began to be distributed to the press showing, for example, the interior of the new mid-range model. The name of the car and further details were announced at a later date. And in January 1965, representatives of the press were allowed to drive the R 16 for the first time and the first vehicles were produced. The premiere for the general public then took place in Geneva in March 1965.
