Even before the Renault brothers Louis, Fernand and Marcel founded their company in February 1899, Louis Renault was already driving around Paris in a car of his own design. After the early death of his brothers, he ran the company alone until his own demise in 1944. The following year, the ‘Société Anonyme’ was nationalised to become the ‘Régie Nationale des Usines Renault’. In addition to cars, Renault also built lorries, tanks, aircraft and boat engines as well as railcars and locomotives. The brand with the rhombus was also involved in motor racing: In the 1979 season, Renault won the first Grand Prix victory for a car with a turbocharged engine. Since 1999, the French have been co-operating with Nissan.

It was a letter carrier, police officer, harvest worker, craftsman, anti-nuclear activist, student protester, Dakar Rally participant and soup kitchen on wheels. The Renault 4 was a car for everyone because it made no demands, but fulfilled all requirements. A car can't be simpler than this, it doesn't have to be more complicated. This year, the Renault 4 and 4L are 60 years old. We congratulate them with this article, which tells the story of the first models from the sixties and shows four of them in brand new pictures. We also illustrate the rest of the R4 world up to 1975 with plenty of historical material.
Seven years after the Renault 4 was launched, an improved version appeared in 1967 with four instead of three gears and a modified exterior.
