Summary
It is certainly no exaggeration to describe the Renault Espace as a milestone. Of course, there were already buses and vans before the Frenchman, but it was only with the Espace that the single-volume vehicle really established itself in the comfort and family segment. No wonder the Espace was eagerly imitated, but its design remains unique to this day. This vehicle report tells the unusual story of the Renault Espace and shows the elegant all-purpose car in two versions in many current and historical pictures.

Preview (beginning of the article)
In his first test of the Renault Espace for Auto Motor und Sport, Götz Leyrer suspected that it might be the answer to a question that nobody had asked. He was quite wrong. Because although there was no trend towards large families in Germany at the time (or today), the compact van prevailed and the Renault Espace was followed by the Opel Zafira and VW Touran. The vehicle concept has survived to this day and was produced in impressive numbers. So Renault obviously had a good nose when they presented the Espace in Paris in the summer of 1984. The history of the space miracle goes back much further and began back in 1976, when Fergus Pollock was working on a single-volume car in his spare time at the Chrysler Design Studio in Coventry. The ideas were fleshed out in a few 1:1 models on behalf of Head of Design Dick Macadam, but then Chrysler UK first became Talbot and finally the designs were passed on to Matra.
