When Renault launched the R16 on the market in 1964, its variability and good use of space were praised above all, despite the conventional long engine. But its good driving characteristics were also a trump card. The magazine 'hobby' was one of the first to take a close look at the R16. The magazine 'hobby' compared two completely different saloons in 1968, the Renault 16 TS from France and the Ford 17 M RS from Germany. While the Renault was made sporty with classic and careful tuning, the Ford was a modular car, but also one that had it all. The Renault 16 was built for six years without any noticeable changes, but was developed further several times. In August 1970, the 71 model was launched with standardized 1600 cc engines in two power levels. This historical test examines the new 1600/65 hp version and then discusses the earlier changes as advice for second-hand buyers.
With the Renault 16 (R16), the French car manufacturer launched the first hatchback saloon in the upper mid-size class. In addition to its practical characteristics, the five-door car was also well received by fans of sporty driving, with Stirling Moss reportedly recommending that British manufacturers take inspiration from the R16. The Renault 16 entered the automotive scene in 1965 with no previous history, but with a convincing overall concept.
