In 1969, the new R12 did not appear as forward-looking as the Renault models 6 and 16, and Heinz Kranz approached the newcomer with corresponding skepticism. However, the small front-wheel-drive notchback saloon won over the customer with every kilometer driven. In the Renault 12, form strictly followed function, which made for an appearance that took some getting used to, if not whimsical, but made the car very practical and easy to understand. This historical test clearly highlights the advantages of the Renault 12 without dwelling for long on complaints about its appearance. Renault 12 TL - pretty pragmatic
Over eight million Renault 12s were produced in France and by licensed companies such as Dacia between 1969 and 2006, yet you hardly ever see one on our roads. The R12 impressed with its value for money and targeted comfort, as well as being reliable. And it can still hold its own today, as our driving report with many current and historical pictures shows.
In the winter of 1974/1975, the magazine 'hobby' compared eight compact cars from five countries in a meticulous test that required driving on the Nordschleife and the participation of eight test drivers: the Audi 50 competed against the Citroën Ami Super, Datsun Cherry, Fiat 127, Innocenti Mini, Peugeot 104, Renault 5 and Simca 1000 GLE and won hands down. The Datsun Cherry came second, but this was not the only surprise in the extensive comparison test. This article re-edits the findings of that time, showing the results in detail and the vehicles in many archive photos from back then.
Five mid-range coupés from four countries were compared by the magazine 'hobby' in 1975: Toyota Celica, Ford Capri II, Renault R15, Fiat 128 SL and VW Scirocco. And the question was whether the beauty of the cars would win out over their reduced utility value. This carefully edited original comparison test from 1975 reproduces the text and findings and is illustrated with many additional archive images.
