Summary
It was a letter carrier, police officer, harvest worker, craftsman, anti-nuclear activist, student protester, Dakar Rally participant and soup kitchen on wheels. The Renault 4 was a car for everyone because it made no demands, but fulfilled all requirements. A car can't be simpler than this, it doesn't have to be more complicated. This year, the Renault 4 and 4L are 60 years old. We congratulate them with this article, which tells the story of the first models from the sixties and shows four of them in brand new pictures. We also illustrate the rest of the R4 world up to 1975 with plenty of historical material.
This article contains the following chapters
- Sophisticated simplicity
- Counter-clockwise and in keeping with the times
- Premiere with four models at three locations
- The giraffe and the Parisian
- Riding like Guy in France
- A fat Spaniard
- Salü, Ade and Au Revoir

Primitive! Hardly any other word is used as often in the first (German) tests of the Renault 4 as the one commonly used to express Stone Age savagery. "Intellectually and culturally undemanding" explains the dictionary when you look under "P" - and is completely wrong, at least in relation to the Renault. It took the engineers nine years from the initial idea to the market launch in the fall of 1961; the actual development, which began in 1956, took five years. During this time, the Americans produced five full-size saloons - per brand, of course. When space economy is not an issue and the easiest way to compensate for more weight is with a more powerful engine, cars almost design themselves. Especially if the basic technical concept remains unchanged for years. But if you want to get the maximum interior space out of a given exterior size, you suddenly have to ask yourself whether vertical coil springs and shock absorbers in wide wheel arches are really necessary. And if not, the search for a suitable alternative begins. Designing something simple is sometimes a little more complex.
