Predicting the future (car connoisseur quiz)
Before a car is launched on the market, people speculate for a long time about what the new model will look like. In the age before digital image processing, specialist magazines employed illustrators to put the editors' guesses on paper. Sometimes they anticipated the future shape surprisingly accurately, sometimes they were shockingly far off the mark. You can still recognize the six-series BMW or the W123 coupé quite well. But would you have guessed from the picture alone that the slightly Japanese-looking yellow speedster below was supposed to be the expected successor to the Manta, the Opel Calibra?
We've rummaged a little in our archive and selected ten illustrations from three decades that are somewhere in the middle between "well taken" and "completely blown".
If you feel up to it, you can now try to guess the later series models from the drawings. Don't worry, we've left out the biggest mistakes (except for one).
