The forgotten three wheels (car connoisseur quiz)
02/06/2022
Of course, three-wheeled cars have not been completely forgotten. Many people are likely to remember the Messerschmitt cabin scooter in particular. And it is still popular today, perhaps less because of its three wheels than because of its appealing airplane look.
Three-wheeled cars were built again and again; after all, even the Patent Motor Car, which went down in history as Germany's first car, only had three wheels. Dispensing with a fourth wheel certainly has its advantages. A differential can be omitted, weight can be saved and aerodynamics can be improved.
However, the transition from two to three tracks also has disadvantages, such as the space required by the single wheel inside the bodywork or the problems in winter and when loading onto a trailer. You can't just drive over the pit in maintenance mode either, better to remember that before you try it.
Over the decades, interesting designs with just three wheels have been created time and again, and this design was not only popular with cabin scooters.
We have dug a little in our archives and picked out some not quite everyday examples. Our readers now have the opportunity to test their knowledge on the ten tricycles.
