Apollo glut?
01/12/2022
No, we're not talking about NASA's moon flight program, which led to the moon landing with Apollo rockets in the 1960s. We are talking about the Italian-American Apollo GT sports car, of which less than 100 were built in the 1960s.
And on January 27, 2022, two of these elegant coupés with Buick V8 engines will be auctioned off in Arizona, albeit by two different auction houses, namely RM/Sotheby's and Bonhams. All a coincidence? Perhaps it is.
While the black Apollo 3500 GT that RM is bringing under the hammer in Arizona is a very early example with chassis number 1005, Bonhams wants to sell the second-to-last Apollo 5000 GT from 1964, which once belonged to Apollo company co-founder Milt Brown. This dark green car bears the chassis number 1074.
While RM/Sotheby's has set an estimate of USD 125,000 to 165,000 and is auctioning the car without a reserve price, Bonhams is expecting USD 175,000 to 225,000.
One could imagine that the number of collectors looking for one of these rare coupés at exactly the same time is manageable. It will be all the more exciting to see how the two Apollos can assert themselves.
Extensive announcements of the upcoming auctions by RM/Sotheby's in Arizona and Bonhams in Scottsdale have already been published on zwischengas with the complete lot lists and many photos.
