Classic pearls of the future - Toyota GR Yaris
07/01/2021
There are few cars that are more or less as popular as the Toyota GR Yaris. This is partly due to its role models, such as the Lancia Delta Integrale Evo, but also to the fact that Toyota engineers have actually built an almost completely new car that has only a few components in common with the Yaris that gave it its name.
261 turbo horsepower, 1288 kilograms of fighting weight, all-wheel drive, 6-speed manual transmission and a compact body with three doors and analog main instruments - this is the recipe for a modern cult car. The fact that the engine only has three cylinders is easy to get over, especially when the price is not in six figures, but almost modest at EUR 33,200 or CHF 37,900.
Toyota actually wanted to put the homologation vehicle for successful rally use on its wheels, but rules change. Toyota decided to build the powerhouse anyway.
The testers from all over the world were enthusiastic, and the car seems to deliver on the track what it promises on the data sheet.
The looks may be a matter of taste, but the people who were allowed behind the wheel were almost unanimously convinced immediately.
Incidentally, it is built at the Motomachi plant in Toyota City, not too many years ago the Lexus LFA was built nearby. The market will decide how many GR Yaris will be produced, but the Japanese car is certainly a refreshing alternative to the Tesla, I4, EQS, Taycan or e-tron GT and is significantly cheaper to buy ...
