Honest patina is worth more than a top restoration (Question of the week)
Authenticity and originality have become increasingly important for classic cars in recent years. Honest patina is appreciated today, and full original paintwork is considered a selling point. But should a classic car that has aged gracefully really be worth more than a top-restored automobile?
We asked Zwischengas readers via a " question of the week" whether they would actually value an original classic car with patina and signs of use more highly than a car that has been completely restored to new car standard.
The answers from the 574 survey participants did surprise us somewhat, as more than half - 51 percent to be precise - would rate a car in its original condition more highly than a restored car.
Only 18.1 percent thought that a car that had been completely restored to its original specifications should be worth more than an original but patinated vehicle.
29.8 percent did not want to make a general decision and said that it depends on the vehicle.
And half a dozen survey participants (1.0 percent) could not make any sense of any of the answers.
Originality only comes once, and even the best restoration cannot be more original than a vehicle as it left the factory/production line.
