More courage for other stories
In 1969, the media still had the courage for the extraordinary. Today, almost only pictures of racing cars are published. There is neither the time nor the courage for somewhat different stories. Watching the 1969 Monaco GP in the four faces of Jackie Stewart's wife Helen is absolutely world class. Proof once again that pictures are worth a thousand words.
Of course, the women no longer sit so photogenically on the pit wall and cheer along with their husbands. In fact, they are hardly ever on site and when they are, they are shielded and hidden.
But the "Tip" had the courage and the idea for this fantastic double-page spread: "In every race, Helen Stewart fears for her husband's life. Her face dramatically reflects tension and worry, expectation and hope.
But at the end, when the test is happily over, fear and anxiety leave her face and are replaced by a beaming smile, a smile for the winner, who in this case can only be Jackie Stewart....."
Today, unfortunately, it is exactly the opposite and Jackie (82) has to look after the life of Helen, who is seriously ill with dementia.
Jackie drew a comparison with Formula 1: "In modern times, four people have really changed the sport: Gordon Murray, Ross Brawn, John Barnard and Adrian Newey. It only took four people to do that. In business, it was Bill Gates or Steve Jobs. You just need different ideas, a different approach. The race against dementia is no different."
