Strange color markings

Perhaps others have already noticed it, but sometimes you can find different colored markings on exposed sheet metal. The example here shows details on an Alfa Romeo GT Bertone from 1972.
Who has also come across such markings? And does anyone know what purpose these markings are supposed to serve? (e.g. to indicate whether everything was tightened or filled ...).
