When retro cars become classic cars
05/16/2019
When looking at a Volkswagen New Beetle, hardly anyone thinks that it could already be a youngtimer. The new interpretation of the VW Beetle was unveiled in Detroit back in 1998, so the oldest examples are already 21 years old. In just nine years, they will be classic cars and perhaps take part in a Silvretta Classic!
They will probably attract less attention there than a VW Golf IV, but that was presented back in 1997! A Mercedes-Benz A Class is also the same age, as is the Smart.
We will have to wait a little longer for the New Mini (from BMW) as a classic car, but it was also introduced late in 2001.
Last, but certainly no less successful, came the Fiat 500. The Italian reinterpretation of Dante Giacosa's Nuova 500 was built from 2007. So fans of this model will have to wait until 2037 before they can take part in classic car events.
For comparison: the Renault Koleos and the first BMW One Series also came onto the market in 2007.
Will the retro versions be as popular in the future as their predecessors are today? Probably not, but who knows. We'll know soon enough ...
