Electric cars in 50 to 100 years
05/09/2019
Reading an article in Auto Motor und Sport published 45 years ago shows that the chief engineers of large car companies are sometimes right after all.
"Maybe 50 or 100 years", estimated VW development manager Professor Fiala in 1974, until the electric motor would come to mass motorization.
He was obviously not so wrong, because 1974 plus 50 equals 2024. Volkswagenis now even a little faster, as the big electric offensive is set to begin in 2020 with the I.D.
"Electric cars will not grow beyond their original state as long as the problem of heavy, quickly exhausted batteries has not been solved," was written at the time, and apparently this was correctly recognized almost 50 years ago.
However, the hopes for the gas turbine were probably just as wrong as the assumption that hydrogen could establish itself as a fuel.
