The autonomous car is not yet replacing the classic car (Question of the week)
Many experts agree that the self-driving car is coming. Only the timing is still uncertain, as are the adjustments that need to be made to the traffic infrastructure. Fully connected cars need neither traffic signs nor traffic lights, but their efficiency will be impaired by "older" and non-integrated vehicles. Can the classic car survive in modern traffic? And until when? This is what we wanted to find out from Zwischengas readers in our" Question of the Week" . And we were surprised by their optimism!
45 percent of the almost 400 respondents were in favor of the classic/youngtimer retaining its place in modern road traffic for the foreseeable future.
However, 49 percent said that cars that do not think for themselves and are not networked will sooner or later no longer be welcome everywhere. However, opinions differ completely when it comes to timing. 10 percent (absolute) assume that it will be at least another 50 years before the classic/young car is pushed out, while 17 percent see 30 to 50 years as the period in which it will still be possible to drive along in the old car without any problems. 11 percent believe that it will be another 20 to 30 years, while 5 percent assume that another 10 to 20 years will pass without restrictions on driving the old car. 6 percent see the first restrictions coming in ten years or less, which will at least force old cars off certain roads or require extensive modifications to the car.
Incidentally, two percent could not come up with an answer.
Overall, therefore, there is almost a balance between those who hopefully believe that traffic will continue to allow old cars without modern technology in the distant future and those who expect restrictions or even a ban sooner or later. Well, many of us will not live to see such restrictions or even a ban on classic cars if they really do go on for another 50 years.
